They Earned Eternity in a Brief Space of Time

Your guide to the sites in Queens, New York commemorating those who served and died in war.

Glendale Veterans Memorial

This small triangle located at the intersection of Myrtle and Cooper Avenues contains a large granite stele (14-feet in height), with a bronze plaque of a bas-relief female figure holding a torch in her right hand. It was erected in 1921 in honor of the 21 men of the neighborhood who lost their lives in WWI. Sculpted by Anton Schaaf, it is inscribed with these words: ERECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF GLENDALE / IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE / OF THOSE OF THEIR NUMBER WHO / SERVED IN THE WORLD WAR / 1917-1918 / THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO / LOST THEIR LIVES ARE / HERE INSCRIBED

On the memorial the names are listed in alphabetical order by last name and include only the first initial, but I’ve chosen to include their first names (if known) here: Birney Samuel; Bodamer Frederick W; Dettling JosephValentine; Frey C; Graumann JE; Kayser Charles H; Knipper Andrew; Koch Otto; Leonard Clarence Temple; Mathis Joseph F; McGourty JJ; Paynton Frank Edward; Powell George C; Rauth John E; Roesch C; Schmidt Christian John; Shultz W; Sullivan Edward V; Waker Archibald; Winter F
